Rapid Rail Between Lucknow and Kanpur Clears Key Hurdle with LDA Nod

Lucknow – The much-awaited Rapid Rail project connecting Lucknow and Kanpur has taken a significant step forward as the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) has granted the No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project. Once operational, the high-speed train will cut travel time between the two cities to just 40–50 minutes, compared to the current travel duration of over 1.5 hours.

The idea for the rapid transit line was first proposed in 2015, and in April 2021, then Principal Secretary Deepak Kumar initiated the preparation of the Request for Proposal (RFP). By 2022, the plan had progressed to the state level for formal consideration. Inspired by the Delhi–Meerut Rapid Rail corridor, which is under fast-paced development, the Lucknow–Kanpur line will be built on a similar model with features such as high speed, automated doors, advanced braking systems, and smart ticketing.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) recently held meetings with state officials and LDA representatives to finalize the framework. LDA’s approval came with the condition that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) must adhere to Lucknow’s master plan.

The proposed route will begin near Amausi Airport, ensuring easy airport connectivity. One of the key advantages of this rail system will be its all-weather operability, as it will be equipped with cutting-edge technology capable of maintaining full speed even in dense fog conditions.

The rapid rail is expected to not only boost regional connectivity but also provide a major economic and infrastructural push to the twin cities of Lucknow and Kanpur.
